Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch DLR165K Digital Laser Range Finder KitCustomer Review: most affordable pro grade laser range finder Summary: 5 StarsThis is the cheapest entry level pro-grade laser range finder on the market. You can find cheaper but lesser "prosumer" grade laser measures, such as Stanley's FatMax, but the cheaper ones are less accurate than this Bosch. The Bosch's claimed accuracy is + - 1/16" under typical conditions. The claimed accuracy deteriorates to + - 1/8" under adverse conditions such as under strong sunlight at long distances. The Bosch has a fractional resolution down to 1/16". I tested its accuracy against my tape measure out to 20 feet indoors and it was dead on accurate within the limitation of the 1/16" display resolution, meaning it was not even + or - 1/16" from 20 feet, but exactly 20 feet 0 inches!
It has a claimed range up to 165', but I found it could hit this upper limit only at night time. Under strong sunlight conditions expect around 80' to 90' max without using a target plate. It DOES NOT come with either a target plate or red laser enhancement glasses. One feature it has that most other laser measures do not is a flip-out pin at the bottom end of the device that is used when measuring diagonal corner to corner dimensions. Leica's Disto D3 has this feature and the Leica's flip out plate is even more functional, but the Leica costs more than twice as much as the Bosch.
There are a couple of shortcomings with this Bosch. It only displays in three modes: 1. decimal meters, 2. decimal feet, 3. whole feet plus fractional inches. It does not display in either total fractional inches or total decimal inches. I find its inability to display in total fractional inches to be particularly inconvenient. Of course I can get around it, but it's inconvenient nevertheless. Another minor irk is that it uses 4 AAA batteries instead of the more common and cheaper AA batteries. Some other pro grade laser measures, such as Hilti's PD40, are designed better that they get by with only 2 AA batteries.
It comes with a hand strap and a nylon pouch. For the money it really can't be beat and typical homeowners and most professionals alike probably don't need any higher accuracy than + - 1/16", although pros may find the 80' to 90' typical day time range somewhat limiting.
